ON-PAGE SEO

What is On-Page SEO, this refers to all of the elements on your website that help search engines determine the value of your site and rank it accordingly in search results. If you’re wondering how to do on-page SEO for your WordPress website, then this comprehensive guide will be very useful to you. We’ll cover everything from creating high-quality content to using keywords effectively to protecting your website from search engine penalties.

1. Keyword Research For On-Page SEO

This is an area where many people fall, especially when they’re just starting. They choose a few keywords and build pages around them. While that does have some value, you’ll get a much greater return on your time if you use keyword research to identify topics in which you can become an expert and then create content around those topics. The more targeted your content is (both from a search perspective and a reader perspective), the better your chance of ranking well in search engines, keeping users on your site longer, and building trust with search engines.

2. Headlines, Description, Title Tag & Meta Description

The titles of your posts should be as search engine friendly as possible. This means using keywords, rather than just going with something catchy. The title of your post shouldn’t have a question mark at the end. On-page, SEO is as necessary as off-page SEO.

When writing your meta description, make sure that it includes your most important keyword and is under 160 characters in length. To see what your meta description looks like in search results, click edit next to any one of your past articles. It will show up right below where you enter the actual content of each post. Keep in mind that these two things work together – if someone is searching for how much protein should I eat? they might click on a result that has that exact phrase within its title and meta description because they think they’ve found exactly what they’re looking for.

3. Comparing Heading Tags with ALT Text

Comparing headings and alt text provides insight into how search engines view a page differently. Search engines will look at heading tags as keywords, whereas alt text isn’t considered in any ranking algorithms. So it’s important to use meaningful alt text instead of just filler words or numbers that might not be read by a human reader. When determining if your heading tags are optimized, you should use all six levels of headings on each page of your website and make sure each level has relevant and keyword-rich text. If all your heading tags are filled with keywords, it may look unnatural—but filling them with great content is far better than having no keywords at all.

4. Article Body Length For On-Page SEO

For on-page SEO purposes, your article should be a minimum of 600-800 words. This should be a high-level overview of what you need to do on your website. Set up your audience to follow along with you as you implement these things in detail. Remember, there are no stupid questions. Write as if talking to an inexperienced friend or family member about their business who needs basic advice on how search engines work and what they can do about it. For example, search engines like Google employ bots that scour websites looking for various pieces of code that match those it’s programmed to look for.

5. Readability Score

A score of between 40 and 60 indicates a readable and scannable piece of writing. Unfortunately, most business websites have poor readability scores. Therefore, you must optimize your website’s content to improve its readability score. When writing for your website, make sure that your sentences are no longer than 20 words in length. Try to use shorter words when possible instead of long ones.

If a word has more than 3 syllables, look at how you can use it in another context or substitute it with a shorter word. Writing easy-to-read sentences will enable search engines like Google and Bingbot to better understand what your page is about.

6. Images, Internal Links, Videos, and Quality

Every aspect of your website should have a meaning. Whether it’s an image, internal link, or external link, every single one of them should be strategically placed and give value to your readers. Every image on your site will be used by search engines like Google as a keyword when your site appears in search results. The same goes for links inside your posts – they help direct traffic back to important pages on your site that you want people to find and read.

7. Plagiarism Free Content

Good, unique content is vital to drawing visitors. You can’t expect Google or other search engines to rank you higher just because you have a cool site. And, if you do rank, that doesn’t mean visitors will find your website. That means you need engaging content that will captivate readers and keep them on your site—so they get those conversions from visiting your page! You also want high-quality, original content so people know you know what you’re talking about (and aren’t trying to trick them). It all starts with making sure your content is as unique as possible—without plagiarizing any of it. Moreover, Google AdSense will not give you approval if you are using others’ content by copy-pasting.

8. HTML/CSS Errors and Social Media Presence

One of Google’s top two ranking factors is website speed and if you want a fast site, your HTML code has to be clean. If you’re not familiar with HTML or CSS, then getting start might seem intimidating. However, there are numerous resources online that offer free tutorials (including here at Moz), and there are plenty of tools like W3C Markup Validation Service that can help test your code. Also, one of our favorite pieces of advice for non-coders is time management—make sure you’re dedicating some time each week just to fix technical issues on your site.

9. Yoast SEO Plugin Settings For On-Page SEO

Yoast SEO is one of my favorite free plugins for managing on-page SEO. This offers a variety of features, but most notably helps you configure your permalinks based on what search engines can and cannot read. It’s also helpful in identifying areas where you may want to improve page titles and meta descriptions.
